Liposuction

Liposuction

Liposuction can be used as an isolated procedure or it can be combined with other body contouring procedures to treat areas of stubborn fat. Liposuction works best as a tool to target areas that are resistant to exercise.

Liposuction is performed under general or local anesthesia. The operation can take one or more hours depending on the volume that needs to be aspirated, and whether it is combined with other procedures.

Small incisions are made in natural body creases and the fat is suctioned out until the desired contour is achieved.

Abdominoplasty

Recovery

There is usually minimal discomfort after liposuction and this can easily be controlled with simple analgesia. To continue to minimize your swelling and to facilitate the flattest and firmest body contour possible, we strongly advise patients to continue to wear their compression garments for six weeks. Bruising may be present for a period of up to two weeks post surgery.

Final result from liposuction may take several months to show and recovery may continue for up to a year. Temporary numbness in the liposuction areas is normal and can be present for up to a year after surgery.

You should resume normal exercise as soon as possible as this helps with skin tightening. Most patients return to work within a few days of surgery.

Thighplasty (Thigh Lift)

Thighplasty

A thigh lift is a body contouring procedure that reshapes the thighs. Excess fat and skin is removed and the supporting ligaments of the thigh are re-suspended. This gives a smoother, more toned look to the skin while improving the contours and proportions of the thigh and lower leg.

An incision is placed in the groin and this may be extended along the inner thigh. Excess skin is removed and underlying tissue repositioned and secured. The residual fat is removed with liposuction and contoured to a more pleasing form.

Recovery

The surgery is performed under general anesthetic with an overnight hospital stay. There is minimal pain following the procedure, which is usually well controlled with both intravenous and oral medications. You will need to wear a garment after surgery for a minimum of 6 weeks.

Most patients require 2-4 weeks off before returning to work.

Brachioplasty (Armlift)

Brachioplasty

A brachioplasty or ‘arm lift’ combines liposuction with incisions in the inner arm and armpit to tighten the surrounding skin producing slimmer, more appealing arms. The procedure targets the inner aspect of the upper arms – an area that is resistant to most forms of exercise, including weight training.

The operation involves a combination of skin and fat excision, along with liposuction. The targeted area is marked out and liposuction performed to reduce the fat in this region. The excess skin is then carefully excised to ensure that the scar is positioned in as inconspicuous a site as possible.

Abdominoplasty

Recovery

The surgery is performed under general anesthetic and takes Dr. Kim 1 ½ to 2 hours to complete. There is minimal pain and this can be well controlled with oral analgesia.

Most patients will need 1-2 weeks recovery time off work. You will be required to wear a garment that aids in the control of swelling and wound healing for up to 6 weeks following the procedure.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves abdominal contours by removing excess skin and fat while tightening the muscles. An abdominoplasty or ‘tummy tuck’ is an operation designed to reshape the entire abdomen. The modern tummy tuck removes excess skin, fat and tightens any loose musculature to create a flat tummy and svelte waistline. Liposuction is required in nearly all cases to add the finishing touches to your contour.

A full tummy tuck targets both the lower and upper abdomen. The entire abdominal skin is re-draped and the abdominal wall musculature is tightened. The umbilicus (belly-button) is also moved into a more appropriate location. A mini tummy tuck is a smaller procedure which principally concentrates on tightening and reshaping the lower abdomen.

The procedure is very popular among women, particularly those who’ve had significant weight loss or have had children. It’s often combined with diastasis recti repair, to bring the rectus abdominis muscles back together, or with a panniculectomy remove an “apron” of hanging skin from the lower abdomen after massive weight loss. It can also be combined with a mons pubis lift or with breast augmentation or breast lift, as part of a full mommy makeover.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty surgery, an out-patient procedure takes 1 ½ to 3 hours. The most common technique involves A horizontal incision is placed in the pubic region, along the ‘bikini line’ (or utilizing your caesarean scar should you have one). The final scar is designed to fall discreetly within your undergarments, lingerie and/or swimsuit lines. If your abdominal muscles are separated (for example after pregnancy) then these are bound back together. The excess skin and fat is then removed, and your belly button is re-created. Liposuction is often combined with an abdominoplasty to contour the abdomen and can be extended to include the hips, flanks and thigh regions.

When the amount of loose skin is minimal and the excess fat deposits are located below the navel, a less extensive procedure called a “mini abdominoplasty” may be recommended. Unfortunately not many pateints are candidates for this. This involves a short horizontal incision and can sometimes avoid the incision around the navel. Once the incisions are closed, a firm elastic bandage is placed over the area. Any discomfort can be relieved with medication prescribed by your surgeon. You may be up and around in a day or two, but heavy physical activity should be avoided for 6 weeks. Most patients return to work within one to three weeks depending on the on the extent of the abdominoplasty. Although every effort is made to minimize scarring, the scars will be permanent, gradually fading over time. Generally it is good to have someone home to help out for 1-2 weeks.

Recovery

You will initially be nursed in a flexed position on your bed and you will slowly straighten up over the next few days prior to your discharge. There will be drains in your abdomen which are removed usually by the time of discharge.

While recovery time will vary from patient to patient based on the extent of surgery undertaken, you should plan for the following:

  • At least 2-3 weeks off work
  • No heavy lifting for 6 weeks
  • You must have someone to help with the care of young children for at least the first 3 weeks post-operatively.

The abdomen feels “tight” for several weeks after surgery, as though you are wearing an internal corset. Numbness may be present around the incision and the belly itself and in some cases may be permanent. The scar begins to fade after 3 months and may take 1 to 2 years to reach its final appearance. The majority of bruising and swelling will resolve by 6 weeks but can persist for several months.
