Otoplasty (Prominent Ears)

Otoplasty

Ear reshaping surgery, or otoplasty, is a procedure that is used to ‘pin back’ overly prominent ears. The goal is to achieve a natural appearance, with the ears in harmony with the rest of the face.

The operation is more commonly performed in childhood but is also successful in the adult. All incisions are small and well hidden at the back of the ear. It can provide great psychological benefits to anyone who has been teased about the size or shape of their ears, has had a serious ear injury, or simply wants to improve their appearance.

An incision is made behind the ear to gain access to the cartilage, which is then is reshaped, contoured and then sutured into a more aesthetically pleasing position.

Incisions nearly always camouflage nicely in the natural crease on the back of the ear. The skin is then closed and a bulky dressing and headband is applied for about five days.

Otoplasty surgery may be helpful for the following conditions:

  • Large or protruding ears
  • Lop ear (top of the ear folds downward or inward)
  • Cupped ear (a small ear)
  • Large, stretched, or torn earlobes

Recovery

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthetic as a day case, or under local anesthesia in the office and takes less than an hour. Following surgery, a bulky bandage will be placed over the ears to protect them for 5-10 days as well as helping control the swelling. Patients can usually return to work or school once the bandage has been removed. After this period, the patient is encouraged to wear a tennis headband to bed for another 4-6 weeks to protect the newly reshaped cartilage.

Most patients report very little pain after this procedure, although there may be a little discomfort or soreness if you bump your ears over the first few weeks.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is a treatment to reduce facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars.

The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. This popular procedure is also called Lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporization.

Laser resurfacing can treat:

  • Acne scars
  • Age spots
  • Crow's Feet
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Sagging skin
  • Scars
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Wrinkles

Erbium-yag: This type of laser is used to remove superficial and moderately deep lines and wrinkles on the face, hands, neck and chest. One of the benefits of erbium laser resurfacing is minimal burning of surrounding tissue. This laser causes fewer side effects -- such as swelling, bruising, and redness -- so your recovery time should be faster than with CO2 laser resurfacing.

Recovery

  • You may feel itching or stinging for 12 to 72 hours after the procedure. Five to seven days after laser resurfacing, your skin will become dry and peel.
  • Once the skin heals, you can wear oil-free makeup to minimize redness, which usually fades in two to three months.
  • You will probably notice that your skin is slightly red for a while after surgery. It is particularly important that you use a "broad-spectrum" sunscreen, which screens ultraviolet B and ultraviolet A rays, to protect your skin during that time. When selecting a sunscreen, look for one specially formulated for use on the face. It should have a physical blocker, such as zinc oxide. and a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Also limit your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wearing a broad-brimmed hat can help protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays.

Fat Injections

Fat Injections

As we age, our faces lose volume, particularly in areas like the cheeks, lips and around the eyes. Liposuction procedures can often be combined with volume restoration of the face, transferring the removed fat to areas where it is needed. The fat is injected using blunt needles so no facial scars are created during the procedure. As opposed to synthetic dermal fillers, the transferred fat stays permanently where it is placed. Sometimes it is necessary to repeat the procedure as some of the fat is absorbed, but often one treatment is all you need.

Fat is removed from your donor area through a suction cannula in the same way a liposuction procedure is performed. This is done very gently to help minimize trauma to the fat cells during the process. The fat is then centrifuged and purified to separate the fat cells from the harvested fluid. This fat is then expertly injected while contouring and molding the target area, to give the desired effect.

Recovery

  • A dressing or bandages may be applied after surgery dependent on the area grafted. This will be changed at your first post-operative appointment.
  • You may feel tender and there may be some swelling after the procedure. A pressure garment may be required on your donor area just like in liposuction. Like all surgical procedures, early mobilization after surgery promotes healthier circulation and a quicker recovery.

Endoscopic & open browlift

Browlift

A brow lift, or forehead lift, can help rejuvenate the upper face by lifting the brow line to a higher, more youthful, position and reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles of the forehead. It is often performed in combination with a facelift and/or blepharoplasty for full facial rejuvenation.

The endoscopic browlift is a minimal access technique performed by using an endoscope and specialized instruments placed through small incisions made within the hairline. This allows repositioning of the underlying tissue and muscle and re-suspension of the brow to give a more youthful appearance.

Recovery

  • Recovery time will vary and may be anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks based on the size of your incisions. Your incisions are stitched, and your forehead may be taped with your head wrapped in a loose bandage to minimize swelling and bruising.
  • After the removal of your staples in scalp where scars are hiden, (7-14 days) you will be ready to return to most normal activities.
  • There will be temporary bruising and numbness both at the site and also the surrounding area, which may last for up to two weeks. As with all other surgery, medication will be prescribed to help prevent any pain or discomfort and prevent any infection.
