Split Earlobe Repair
Earlobe repair surgery, also known as earlobe reconstruction or earlobe rejuvenation, is a cosmetic procedure that is commonly performed to repair a split or stretched earlobe.
The earlobe is a soft, fleshy area located at the bottom of the ear, and it is the most common location for body piercing. However, wearing heavy earrings, trauma, or gauging can cause the earlobe to tear or stretch, resulting in a split or elongated appearance.
Earlobe surgery reattaches stretched or torn earlobes back to the main part of the ear, thus closing any holes or eliminating and dangling pieces of skin.
Damaged earlobes are quite common. While they are inconvenient and can make a person feel insecure or self-conscious, they can be easily repaired. Earlobe repair surgery helps patients achieve better facial aesthetics and improves their confidence and self-esteem by repairing and reshaping the earlobes.
Good candidates for earlobe repair
- Have stretched, torn, or damaged ear lobes
- May have been born with ear lobes that are too large or too small
- May have a large hole as a result of gauging
- May have overly elongated ear lobes or keloids
- Resist wearing heavy earrings out of fear that the earrings will fall out or further stretch the ear lobe piercing
- Resist cutting or styling their hair in a fashion that reveals their ears
Split Earlobe Repair Surgical Procedure
Earlobe repair is one of the most straightforward, simple, and quick procedures a plastic surgeon can perform. The procedure can take up to an hour to perform if both ears are being repaired. Torn earlobes, a split earlobe, or lobes that have been significantly stretched will require the surgeon to rearrange the soft tissue and replace the tissue that has been damaged. In the event the patient has experienced only a partial tear, our experienced surgeon will remove the damaged earlobe skin and stitch the lobe back together using small sutures. Patients can expect natural-looking earlobes with a normal size and shape once the procedure is complete.
Earlobe surgery starts with Dr. Michael K. Kim administering a local anesthesia, so your earlobe will be numb but you’ll be awake. He then marks the area of your earlobe that needs to be removed and uses a scalpel to make a clean, straight cut through the earlobe. The damaged tissue is removed, and the remaining healthy tissue is repositioned and sutured together.
Dr. Kim may use a variety of techniques to ensure that the new earlobe has a natural and symmetrical appearance.
In some cases, he might use an “inverted V” technique, where he makes a V-shaped cut in the earlobe and then bring the two sides of the V together to form a new earlobe. Alternatively, he may decide that a straight-line closure or a Z-plasty technique is better, which involves making angled cuts in the earlobe to create a zigzag pattern that helps to hide the scar.
After your surgery is complete, Dr. Kim will cover the earlobe with a sterile dressing to protect it from infection and promote healing.
Recovery After Split Earlobe Surgery
Ear lobe repair is a low-pain procedure with an easy recovery period. After the surgery, the patients may either be prescribed a special ointment to use or a special brown tape to apply to their ear lobes depending on the surgical technique utilized.
Patients can expect swelling and bruising to disappear within a few weeks. People vary in how uncomfortable they find small operations. Many people will require no analgesia. However, if you are finding it painful then paracetamol and or ibuprofen will be sufficient for most people. It is sensible to have analgesia in the house in case you need it.
It is worth remembering that it is easier to keep pain away than it is to get rid of pain once you are in pain.
Dr. Michael K. Kim recommends to avoid overexposure to the sun and harsh soaps while allowing the lobes to fully heal.
In most cases, patients who undergo earlobe repair surgery do not need to take any time off work. However, they may want to schedule their procedure toward the end of the week so they can rest and recuperate during the weekend.
